In our digitized world, it‘s easy to forget the analog processes we once had to use to accomplish everyday tasks. Perhaps that‘s what draws so many of us to film photography – it‘s a whole science and art form that many of us have forgotten or never even learned.
Photographer Matthew Cetta took his own fascination with film photography one step further by breaking the process down to its fundamental parts in his series “Photogenic Alchemy”. His experimental work was driven by plain old curiosity:
“What if I soaked my film in lemon juice? What if I introduced absinthe to the film’s emulsion? What if I electrified the film and then froze it afterward?” The artist applies these and other experimental methods to his work.
Besides the value of the images themselves as beautiful works of art, it’s interesting to try and imagine how each chemical or process left its mark on his work.
