Ever had a nightmare about drowning, only to wake up in the warm, safe and dry in the safety of your own bed? Well say hello to the Bayou Corne sinkhole in Loiusiana, which is fixing to swallow up an entire community in the U.S. Petrochemical company Texas Brine is being held responsible for the environmental disaster, which is currently at 24 acres and more than 750 feet (apprx. 228 m) deep with the potential to grow even larger.
The sinkhole began forming last year when large salt caverns that Texas brine dug below the bayou began to collapse, the gases contained therein (some of which are flammable) seeping out into the small town above. Some residents have been forced out of their homes, while others are determined to stay, despite the danger that the sinkhole might swallow up their entire community.
Check out the video below for footage of the sinkhole swallowing trees whole.
