With its glaciers, volcanoes, geysers, verdant valleys, waterfalls and fields of black lava, Iceland is home to some of the most amazing landscapes in the world. It’s a beautiful place to tour by car, but you don’t get a sense of the island’s insane geological diversity unless you see it from the sky.
We were lucky enough to take an aerial tour of Iceland, which brought us from Reykjavík to the massive Langajökull Glaicer, past the Gullfoss waterfall and over Geysir (which gave its name to all other geysers). We flew above craters, and even saw smoke still pouring out of Eyjafallajökull: the volcano which caused months of air traffic headaches when it exploded in 2010.
Our plane was a small Cessna four-seater, and we were allowed to open the window in order to snap some incredible shots. An unforgettable experience — we’ve traveled a lot, but this was the most unreal landscape we’ve ever seen.
