It’s truly inspiring when you can see someone young excel at and succeed with an artistic craft. Someone who is able to do what they want in life without having to get the all-important “job” that society wants them to get. Fine art photographer Alex Stoddard is just such a person – he creates gripping surreal images that look like they’ve come right out of a ghostly fairytale or nightmare and he’s only 19 years old.
It’s unclear whether Stoddard uses digital manipulation or clever scene preparation to get his incredible shots. Whatever the case might be, the result is amazing – the people in his photographs float and writhe through a grim fairytale landscape that can be at once both beautiful and terrifying.
Stoddard’s interest in photography began at 16 in the woods behind his home in Georgia in the deep U.S. south. Judging by his work, it looks like he has steadily improved since then. Stoddard writes of his own work; “His work focuses on the human form and the process of infusing it with natural surroundings. He also strives to create whimsical and surreal portraits.”
If you like Stoddard’s work, check out Kyle Thompson as well – he’s another surprisingly young and successful photographer who also enjoys creating dark and surreal images.
