Bikes are naturally very bulky and large products, but Basten Leijh has tried to provide an alternative to your traditional bike. Leijh has developed the “Sandwichbike”, an IKEA-inspired bike design that packs flat and can be assembled at home.

Bleijh’s intention was to create a bike that re-examins materials, manufacturing and production of the common bike. The bike parts come in a box with all the parts included. It features two wooden plates that gives the user the freedom to print and cut whatever they wish on it, giving each bike a touch of personalization.

People speculated that the bike wouldn’t be as heavy duty as they would like, but the bike weighs 17 kilograms, using sturdy beech plywood and stainless steel as materials.

The name of the bike was inspired by the ease at which you can assemble the bike. The designer claims that if you can make a sandwich, you can assemble this bike.
