Artist Uses Her Skin As Canvas For Embroidery

The artist becomes the artwork in this new piece by Eliza Bennett called “A Woman’s Work Is Never Done.” Using the palm of her hand as her canvas, Bennett stitched the top layer of her skin with colorful thread aiming to create the image of an incredibly work-worn hand.

By juxtaposing the feminine technique of embroidery with the roughness of hard work done by hand – the artist challenges the pre-conceived notion that “women’s work’ is light and easy.” According to Bennett, her project aims to address “the effects of hard work arising from employment in low paid ancillary jobs such as cleaning, caring, and catering, all traditionally considered to be ‘women’s work.’”

The rest of her work takes a similar approach to gender issues, using mildly disturbing images or forms to deal with issues regarding female objectification. To see more, check out her website!
