I love all kinds of wooden sculpture, but I find chip carvings like these to be the most soothing and mesmerizing. The intense geometric forms and patterns prevalent in this ancient style of carving are absolutely beautiful.
Although modern wood carvers and hobbyists have added design elements of their own, many elements of these designs are present in historical antiques, and even in ancient metal decorations that have survived longer than the wooden sculptures that probably inspired them. Carvings like these are part of the folk art in many different parts of Europe – if you’re from Eastern, Northern or Western Europe, chances are you’ve seen a chip carving. Similar styles have also been used in Asia as well.
Imagine the craftsmanship required by these modern wood carvers to cut wood into such a precise and intricate pattern!
