One Reddit user, channeling his inner Indiana Jones, discovered an amazing collection of old photographs in his grandparents’ attic. While sorting out the belongings of his late grandmother, user American Mustache came across a box of never-before-seen photographs of the Challenger disaster in 1986. He says the pictures were given to his grandfather who, at the time, worked as a contractor for NASA.
The twenty-six shots capture the whole tragedy from a new angle, beginning to end. Starting off with what seemed to be a successful launch, the photos soon show the unfortunate twist of events that led to the shuttle’s explosion only 10 miles over the Atlantic. It was said that the Challenger crashed due to a faulty seal in one of the rocket boosters. The mission ended up killing 7 crewmembers and shutting NASA’s shuttle space program down for 3 years.
