The caddisfly larvae are thought to be one of the best tiny architects in the world of insects. And for a long time they’ve been building their protective cases with what their environment could provide them with – sand, gravel, snail shells and other debris. It appears that these little creatures can work with whatever they got, or are given. Since 1980′s, French artist Hubert Dupart has been kind of collaborating with the larvae and gives them something a bit shinier, and a bit fancier. He provides larvae with such materials as 18-karat gold pieces, pearls, turquoise, beads, opals, etc, to craft their shelters.
The larvae definitely took their chance on it and used all of the new and sparkly materials to build their tiny protective cases. The result is amazingly extravagant. Their sheaths truly look like pieces of jewelry – one of a kind and undoubtedly hand crafted.
