Cyclist Spends 9 Hours Pedaling Around London To Create An Image Of A Reindeer On A Fitness App

Some believe that all people are creative on some level. Some people take that belief to a completely new level. Take Anthony Hoyte, for example – a recreational cyclist that loves what he does so much, he decided to dedicate a lot of time into it and bring it further by cycling for long hours just to create images on a fitness app called “Strava”. Of course, it would be too little to draw just any ordinary image at this time of the year, therefore he decided to bring some festive cheer and draw a reindeer while cycling around London.

More info: Anthony Hoyte

This cyclist, Anthony Hoyte from Cheltenham, has quite an interesting hobby of drawing images on fitness apps by pedaling around

Even though Anthony calls himself a recreational cyclist and club cyclist, he puts a lot more effort and time than you’d expect from someone who is described as such. He says his Strata art creations take quite a while to plan but he tries to focus on quality rather than quantity. He’s gotten into it by seeing others do it: “I’d seen others doing it, notably Stephen Lund in Canada, and thought, “I’m going to try that!” said Hoyte.

His most recent festive drawing took 9 hours of pedaling to create

Last year, he surprised the cycling world with this adorable Santa that took 4 and a half hours to create

Hoyte is actually trained as a designer and says that even though he doesn’t use his training in his job, it definitely helps when it comes to planning his artwork. He usually studies Google and other online maps and looks for shapes in the existing roads—”[it’s] a bit like spotting pictures in clouds,” he says. “If something jumps out at me—like perhaps a road that looks like a nose—then I’ll try and find eyes and so on. If nothing jumps out, I’ll try somewhere else, but I’ll keep coming back to places to see what I see.” He tries to stick to the road pattern as much as possible but cuts through parks and car parks or university campuses if that’s required to get the perfect line.

And this cute Snowman was his version of a Christmas greeting card in 2017

But he certainly doesn’t keep this hobby only for the Christmas season

Since he’s living in quite a small city of Cheltenham, he usually visits bigger cities in the UK in order to execute his creations. So far, he’s cycled around Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds, London, and Sheffield but says he’d love to cycle internationally and says that US cities would probably present quite a challenge for him with their regular grid patterns.

And keeps surprising us with various pieces of Strava art – drawings created on fitness tracking app, Strava

Hoyte started drawing like this back in 2016 and currently has quite a handful of “artwork” he’s created

Apparently, he even won 1st place in the Bristol Cycling Festival Strava art competition in 2017 with this piece

He says planning his drawings is a bit like spotting pictures in clouds – he studies maps and looks for shapes in existing roads

People were amazed by his creations and also amused at how much time must go into this

Scientists Have Discovered 71 New Species In 2019 And Here’s How 25 Of Them Look

We’ve mapped the world, discovered all the continents (though Atlantis remains elusive), and sometimes it feels like there’s nothing new to find on our little blue planet. But Earth is still full of mysteries and surprises!

Scientists find new plant and animal species nearly every day and it proves that there are still adventures to be had in the deep corners of the world. So if you’ve ever harbored ambitions of being an Indiana Jones-esque scientist, your dream can still come true. In 2019, more than a dozen researchers from the California Academy of Sciences added a stunning 71 new species to our family tree.

Among these freshly found species are 17 fish, 15 geckos, 8 flowering plants, 6 sea slugs, 5 arachnids, 4 eels, 3 ants, 3 skinks, 2 skates, 2 wasps, 2 mosses, 2 corals, and 2 lizards. They were found across 5 continents and 3 oceans. And while we applaud the fact that there are more species of gecko on Planet Earth, we’re worried about there being more species of wasp, too.

We’ve included some of the very best photos of these new species, so scroll down, upvotes your favorites, and let everyone know in the comments what you thought about each one. And be sure to read Bored Panda’s interview with a representative of the California Academy of Sciences below.

According to a representative of the California Academy of Sciences, this year’s list of new species was “a little lower” than usual, but “full of mighty finds.”

“Since 2010, Academy scientists have described 1,375 species—quite a number! Here are numbers from previous years this decade:

2010 (113 [new species])

2011 (140)

2012 (189)

2013 (91)

2014 (221)

2015 (103)

2016 (133)

2017 (85)

2018 (229)

2019 (71).”

The Academy representative told Bored Panda that “it takes years of training, collaboration with colleagues and local residents in a given region, and species expertise for scientists to properly identify and collect species in the wild.”

“As with many species—like twilight zone reef fish and insects—there is sometimes only a tiny window of a few seconds for a scientist to act quickly and collect a specimen in the wild. It can take years of training and support to help that scientist make important, well-informed, split-second decisions in the field!”

Classifying new species isn’t without its obstacles and things like lack of funding or training can seriously hinder us from solving life’s mysteries. “It's especially hard to secure funding for maintaining collections staff, taking adequate care of specimens, and training/retaining new scientists with the expertise to confirm that a new species discovery is truly new to science.”

I Spent 35 Days Trying To Capture The Captivating Kingfisher (27 Pics)

$

My name is Ruurd Jelle van der Leij and I’m a Dutch wildlife photographer and filmer. Over the past 35 days, I’ve spent more time in my shed than inside my house. The reason. I was working on a unique series of pictures of a kingfisher. The bird appeared in my garden a little over a month ago. It discovered the pond which contains a lot of fish. Before I had quite some experience with kingfishers so I knew that by placing a branch in the right place, I should be able to give the bird a nice fishing spot which was also easy to photograph.

And so it went, the bird kept coming back and after two weeks of filming the hunt and photographing it, I started a more creative approach. As kingfishers are a feast for the eyes, millions of pictures of the bird already exist. So I went for other angles like black and white, backlight and spotlight moments (lowkey) that only appeared one hour a day in that part of my garden. This shows the difficulty of taking all these pictures. When there was enough light for flight shots there was no bird and when the bird spend hours in a row in front of the shed, the sun was gone. These are the frustrating factors I always face during photography and film and you simply have to deal with it. When the trust was gained it was also very easy to replace the favorite branch of the bird for other branches or objects. This is where the book came in. A shot I knew would be nice to have and was not difficult at all to create anymore. After 6 hours, the bird showed up and without hesitation, it sat down on the book, even on the right page.

The most difficult was the underwater shot, but especially when you film a hunting kingfisher, you do want to know what happens once the bird enters the water. By creating a large setup with an aquarium I was able to film the catch and after a week of trying the photo was also acceptable.

After spending 3 years in the Dutch Wadden sea working with a team on the movie WAD, it is very satisfying to work in the garden with my kids around. In the past year, I photographed several species in front of the shed. All in their own setting. To me, the most challenging and satisfying part is not the birds but the setting.

Chrissy Teigen Answers People’s Questions About What It’s Like Being A Celeb, And It’s Eye-Opening

People have always been oddly curious about how the rich and famous live. That’s why celebrities can put out autobiographies and magazines can draw readers with deeply personal interviews, but those things don’t usually mention doing housework, going through airport security, or navigating thank-you letter etiquette. Fortunately, for that, we have Twitter, and we have Twitter queen Chrissy Teigen to answer all our questions.

The Q&A session started when someone wondered aloud whether celebrities have “junk drawers where they throw random cords and pens” and tagged her. (She does, but it’s unusually neat.) From there she opened up the field for whatever questions, from the mundane to the thoughtful, that her followers could throw at her. It’s not shocking or juicy, just interesting in a way that will make you say “...huh. That makes sense,” but that’s the point.

Here at Lithuanian Airports, we are certain that you have seen many different Christmas trees: natural, modern, innovative, and simply quirky. However, we can guarantee – you’ve never seen anything like this one.

With the winter travel season well underway, the Aviation security officers at Vilnius Airport opted for an unusual take on the classic Christmas tree, aiming to send an educational message on the importance of aviation security. Using items that are prohibited to carry in hand luggage and which were taken away from passengers during screening, the lads at the Aviation security unit of Lithuania’s main airport created a truly unique educational masterpiece.

Knives, scissors, lighters, blades, and all sorts of other dangerous goods – this Christmas tree has them all. So if you don’t want your personal, yet prohibited, belonging to land on our next year’s Christmas tree – better check out the baggage requirements before you pack for your next flight.

Person Destroys “Women Didn’t Grow Up On Star Wars The Way Men Did” Argument With A Badass Story

Yes, there are women who are into Star Wars, and some people can’t believe we’re still having this conversation. If you’re wondering why it’s come up again, it’s because fans are annoyed after Cosmopolitan printed a Star Wars 101 article that’s so fluffy and patronizing it’s kind of hard to believe it’s real. This Twitter user spotted the article that basically implies that millennial women—yes, that would be women in their 20s and 30s—would only potentially be interested in the series for the opportunity to lust after brooding villains (and have no cultural references from before 2010, for some weird reason. Who talks like this?)

This Cosmo article had people rolling their eyes

The tired article reminded the internet of a couple of years ago, when people were surprised by the proportion of women, over 40% of opening night audiences, turning up to see new Star Wars releases, and the internet argued that while the introduction of some new heroines might have driven statistics up a bit, this was no new phenomenon.

Our favorite picture to pull out when anyone questions whether women in fandom are a new trend is this awesome picture that an old-school Star Wars fan posted of a teenage girl posing in a costume that she made just after the release of the very first Star Wars film, A New Hope. Early cosplayers didn’t have many references to work with before the age of the internet, which makes her dedication especially impressive.

A Tumblr user shared this awesome vintage cosplay pic

The picture drew comments from people for whom, regardless of gender, Star Wars and other sci-fi series were big parts of their childhoods. We think “not understanding statistics well” nails it… science fiction history scholars say that even in the 1940s, with the rise of printed science fiction, polls indicated that between 40% and 50% of readers were women. Doesn’t look that different from the amount of young women heading to theaters to see Star Wars 75 years later. The conclusion? Humans just like fiction, so let’s retire this stereotype that geeky women are a rare species.

Here’s what commenters had to say

Artist Illustrates 9 Mental Illnesses And Disorders As Haunting Creatures

Whether we're talking about Melancholia (1514) by Albrecht Durer or The Scream (1893) by Edvard Munch, artists have been portraying mental disorders for centuries. These difficult subjects are important to current online creators as well. Shawn Coss, for example, has tackled them numerous times in 2016 as well as 2018. Recently, Korean-born Canadian artist Sillvi also decided to explore these grim alleys.

"Alzheimer's disease is a progressive disorder that causes brain cells to waste away (degenerate) and die. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia — a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills that disrupts a person's ability to function independently." -Mayo Clinic

"I don't want to claim originality for the idea," Sillvi told Bored Panda. "I've seen multiple artists depict mental illnesses as monsters. What motivated me to do my own version was because these depictions seemed to either romanticize or demonize the illnesses. Majority of them focused on manifesting some sort of monster that causes pain to their victims. I didn't want to draw monsters. I wanted to draw how they feel, and that was the initial motivation."

"Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn't worth living. -Mayo Clinic"

Sillvi acknowledged that portraying these kinds of things can be very difficult. "My depictions are not perfect, and the experiences of those suffering from them can differ for each individual. I've made sure to include excerpts from credible sources on each illness I covered in the description of my Instagram posts. The last thing I want is spreading misinformation."

"Quite often, the term “anxiety attack” and “panic attack” are used interchangeably, but they are not the same condition.

Anxiety disorders include disorders that share features of excessive fear and anxiety and related behavioral disturbances. Fear is the emotional response to real or perceived imminent threat, whereas anxiety is anticipation of future threat. Obviously, these two states overlap, but they also differ, with fear more often associated with surges of autonomic arousal necessary for fight or flight, thoughts of immediate danger, and escape behaviors, and anxiety more often associated with muscle tension and vigilance in preparation for future danger and cautious or avoidant behaviors. Sometimes the level of fear or anxiety is reduced by pervasive avoidance behaviors. Panic attacks feature prominently within the anxiety disorders as a particular type of fear response. Panic attacks are not limited to anxiety disorders but rather can be seen in other mental disorders as well. (DSM-5)"

"Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, rape or other violent personal assault.

PTSD has been known by many names in the past, such as “shell shock” during the years of World War I and “combat fatigue” after World War II. But PTSD does not just happen to combat veterans. PTSD can occur in all people, in people of any ethnicity, nationality or culture, and any age. PTSD affects approximately 3.5 percent of U.S. adults, and an estimated one in 11 people will be diagnosed PTSD in their lifetime. Women are twice as likely as men to have PTSD.

People with PTSD have intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings related to their experience that last long after the traumatic event has ended. They may relive the event through flashbacks or nightmares; they may feel sadness, fear or anger; and they may feel detached or estranged from other people. People with PTSD may avoid situations or people that remind them of the traumatic event, and they may have strong negative reactions to something as ordinary as a loud noise or an accidental touch.

"Bipolar disorders are brain disorders that cause changes in a person’s mood, energy and ability to function. Bipolar disorder is a category that includes three different conditions — bipolar I, bipolar II and cyclothymic disorder.

People with bipolar disorders have extreme and intense emotional states that occur at distinct times, called mood episodes. These mood episodes are categorized as manic, hypomanic or depressive. People with bipolar disorders generally have periods of normal mood as well. Bipolar disorders can be treated, and people with these illnesses can lead full and productive lives. "Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental disorders affecting children. ADHD also affects many adults. Symptoms of ADHD include inattention (not being able to keep focus), hyperactivity (excess movement that is not fitting to the setting) and impulsivity (hasty acts that occur in the moment without thought).

An estimated 8.4 percent of children and 2.5 percent of adults have ADHD. ADHD is often first identified in school-aged children when it leads to disruption in the classroom or problems with schoolwork. It can also affect adults. It is more common among boys than girls. (American Psychiatric Association)"

"Anorexia (an-o-REK-see-uh) nervosa — often simply called anorexia — is an eating disorder characterized by an abnormally low body weight, an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted perception of weight. People with anorexia place a high value on controlling their weight and shape, using extreme efforts that tend to significantly interfere with their lives.

To prevent weight gain or to continue losing weight, people with anorexia usually severely restrict the amount of food they eat. They may control calorie intake by vomiting after eating or by misusing laxatives, diet aids, diuretics or enemas. They may also try to lose weight by exercising excessively. No matter how much weight is lost, the person continues to fear weight gain.

Anorexia isn't really about food. It's an extremely unhealthy and sometimes life-threatening way to try to cope with emotional problems. When you have anorexia, you often equate thinness with self-worth.

Anorexia, like other eating disorders, can take over your life and can be very difficult to overcome. But with treatment, you can gain a better sense of who you are, return to healthier eating habits and reverse some of anorexia's serious complications. (Mayo Clinic)"

"Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder in which time people have recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas or sensations (obsessions) that make them feel driven to do something repetitively (compulsions). The repetitive behaviors, such as hand washing, checking on things or cleaning, can significantly interfere with a person’s daily activities and social interactions.

Many people have focused thoughts or repeated behaviors. But these do not disrupt daily life and may add structure or make tasks easier. For people with OCD, thoughts are persistent and unwanted routines and behaviors are rigid and not doing them causes great distress. Many people with OCD know or suspect their obsessions are not true; others may think they could be true (known as poor insight). Even if they know their obsessions are not true, people with OCD have a hard time keeping their focus off the obsessions or stopping the compulsive actions." -American Psychiatric Association

"Antisocial personality disorder: a pattern of disregarding or violating the rights of others. A person with antisocial personality disorder may not conform to social norms, may repeatedly lie or deceive others, or may act impulsively. - American Psychiatric Association

Antisocial personality disorder, sometimes called sociopathy, is a mental condition in which a person consistently shows no regard for right and wrong and ignores the rights and feelings of others. People with antisocial personality disorder tend to antagonize, manipulate or treat others harshly or with callous indifference. They show no guilt or remorse for their behavior.

Individuals with antisocial personality disorder often violate the law, becoming criminals. They may lie, behave violently or impulsively, and have problems with drug and alcohol use. Because of these characteristics, people with this disorder typically can't fulfill responsibilities related to family, work or school. – Mayo Clinic"

Dad Wants To Remember His Kids Doing Silly Things So He Puts It Into Comics (30 Pics)

“‘Precious Rascals’ is a comic strip that started with the observations I would make of my kids doing and saying silly things. I knew that time with little ones would be short, and I never wanted to forget those moments,” this is what professional illustrator and father Anthony Holden told Bored Panda about what inspired him to create the popular ‘Precious Rascals’ comic.

“Parenting is full of so many tough realities, and I wanted to have pleasant memories of all the good times with our kids.”

Get ready for some warm, witty, and family-oriented comics. Upvote your favorite ones and let us know in the comments which ones you liked best and why, as well as what you think of Holden’s art. Also, scroll down for Bored Panda’s full interview with the artist.

“I began documenting the funny things our kids would do and say; I showed the strips to friends who told me I should put them on the internet. I posted them on Google's Blogger platform for a long while, but it wasn't really until social media came along that I started to build an audience,” Holden told us about the origins and early days of ‘Precious Rascals.’

#2

“I'm glad I could put the strips out there. I love getting comments from readers that say things like how the strips remind them either of their own kids or of their time growing up with siblings. My favorite side effect of this whole effort though is that our kids will go through the strips and read them like family photo albums. They're constantly quoting their own catchphrases. It's pretty great.”

#3

Holden also revealed how he developed his unique art style throughout the years. “The artistic style has sort of morphed and developed slowly over time. My influences are not particularly obscure or original—Charles Schulz, Jim Davis, Akira Toriyama, Bill Watterson.”

“Most of my day job is spent drawing storyboards digitally, so I've really gravitated towards drawing the strips in pen and ink,” the illustrator noted his love for using traditional mediums as well as digital ones. I love the feel of a metal nib scratching across the surface of the paper. There's nothing like it! Each strip is different of course, but I'd say start-to-finish, an individual strip takes me from around 3–5 hours to complete (including writing all the way through digital touch-up).”

#4

Holden dreamt of being a comic strip artist since he was a kid. However, the path to greatness wasn’t all that clear.

“I had always dreamed of being a comic strip artist when I was younger, but by the time I had reached adulthood, newspaper comics weren't really a thing anymore. The number of folks who make a living just on newspaper syndication is incredibly small. I decided to go to college and study Japanese instead. I had learned to speak Japanese while living in Japan as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” Holden explained.

“When I was in school at BYU, I stumbled across the animation major and decided to give it a shot. I learned about the animation production pipeline and decided to vie for an artist position at a studio somewhere doing storyboards, or animation, or design or something. I was mostly just excited by the idea that I might be able to make a living drawing cartoons.”

#6

He continued: “Getting seen by industry reviewers and recruiters as a student of a school in Utah proved to be a big challenge, but the internet came to the rescue. I had made some friends online with industry pros in LA, and I leaned tenuously and gently on those connections to try and meet people. A very gracious Michael Lester (tremendously talented story artist at DreamWorks) was kind enough to invite me to the studio, where I had a chance to meet with some of my favorite artists in person. This led to an opportunity to apply for the trainee program at DreamWorks, where I got my start in the industry. A good deal of luck helped open doors for me. I'm really thankful to people who gave some unknown kid the time of day.”

#7

Bored Panda was interested to hear whether Holden had any pearls of wisdom for aspiring illustrators and cartoon strip artists.

“A word of advice to anyone out there making comics: keep having fun! Do what you love! Of course, this will not guarantee commercial success, so don't hang all your hopes on getting discovered and making millions.”

#8

“The funny thing about art is [that] there is a way to make a legitimate career out of it; that just usually involves making work for studios and other clients (that's how I pay my bills). The other stuff that you make just for you though? That's the special stuff. I wouldn't give up the chance to make comics ever, even though I do them mostly for fun and personal fulfillment (and occasionally self-publishing; I'll probably be launching a Kickstarter next year for a new comics collection and sketch collection like the last campaign I ran).”

#9

Holden continued: “If I'm extra lucky, one day maybe I'll get to make the stuff I want to make and it'll also pay my bills. I'm not holding my breath for that moment though. For now, I'm making fun stuff for me, after I'm done with client work, the kitchen is all cleaned up, and kids are in bed.”

#10

“My favorite advice to give to artists is this: remember that cartoons are fun to make but, like any hobby or career, they can't be the sum total of who you are as a person. You have to be invested in something larger than drawings. For me, it's my faith and my family,” the artist said.

#11

“Live a good life, and make cartoons a part of it if you can. Don't get hung up on social media numbers as a reflection of who you are: you're a person with real intrinsic value outside of some random metrics the internet associates with your digital persona. Surround yourself with good people whom you love and who love you back and, when you can, watch and make cartoons with those people!”

In the past few years, drawing scenes from conversations I overhear has become my way of combining my love of satirical cartoons and creating an illustrated time capsule of this strange time we live in. Having lived in Los Angeles for the past few years, I've witnessed trends come and go. Hipster mustaches were replaced with man buns, yoga studios started to invite goats to their classes, and online dating became more hellish than ever.

I recently collected all of the illustrations into a book titled #ThingsThatIHear available here (enter promo code "PANDA" for a limited time special discount)

Professor Adds A Fake Question In His Exam To Catch Cheaters & Catches 14 Students Red Handed

$

I was one of those weird kids in school who never cheated during a test. Just the idea of being caught sent a chill down my spine. It was a bit too much to handle for my tiny anxious brain.

However, this did not stop any of my classmates from cheating. There were often mini-competitions for whoever had the smallest handwriting or the best way of hiding their cheat sheets. It got gradually insane with every test they took. If anything, they seemed like adrenaline junkies now that I think about it.

Engineering students underestimated their “of age” professor’s cheating detection…

Image Credit: Ccarlstead (Not actual photo)

A Reddit user by the name of Mwxh recently shared a story about how their engineering professor took cheating detection to the next level. The students underestimated their “of age” professor, who took a modern approach to solving modern problems.

Bored Panda got in touch with Mwxh, the Reddit user who posted the story. He is currently a 4th-year Engineering Major at a Division 1 College.

… resulting in this impressive story By Mwxh on Reddit

A lot of people were left surprised that students are allowed to leave the exam for a bathroom break just like that. “As I said in the only comment I made in that thread, classes in my department generally just let people leave in the middle of the exam and come back, which I have a serious problem with,” explained Mwxh. And who wouldn’t—it opens up a horizon of ways for people to cheat, which is by no means fair to other students.

What is worse, nobody seemed to have any clue as to this being a trap: “I don’t think anyone thought it was a trap since it’s relatively common in this department. He didn’t say anything about it until he e-mailed us after the exam,” said the Reddit user.

Even though the professor meant well, this, in turn, lead to the question of ethics. Was the professor allowed to, effectively, publicly shame students for cheating, when educational institutions generally have a more respectful way of dealing with them? “I think it’s unethical for sure since it would have been much easier for him to just ban students from leaving the room,” elaborates Mwxh. “Though, I don’t know if the department has a specific rule about it or not. Anyway, even if not, I have no sympathy for the cheaters and hope they kicked out of the school.”

We asked the Reddit user whether there were any developments in the story. He had this to say: “I e-mailed the professor the link to this thread when it blew up and also pointed out that some comments said that sharing the names of students would violate FERPA. I haven’t heard back from him. And I haven’t heard anything else in real life about it since he sent the e-mail out.”

As the years go on and technology advances, cheaters will surely find new and more efficient ways to cheat. However, the lesson to be drawn from this story is to never underestimate the opposition—professors have degrees for a reason. Don’t underestimate their power to detect cheating. Even if it is unethical.

Do you have a cheating story to share? Why not talk about it in the comments below?

Woman Lets An Elderly Possum Stay In Her Garage, Her Nephew Posts Pic Online And It Goes Viral

“Gotta admit, that’s one ugly cat,” says a comment on a r/aww thread about an unusual lodger who has taken up residence in someone’s aunt’s garage: an opossum. Hank, as he’s affectionately called, may not have the charm of the puppies and kitties that make up most of the posts on the subreddit for all things cute, but the story’s wholesomeness has Redditors talking about why we should be thankful for opossums, which are often casually called possums in North America.

A Reddit user from Louisiana says that the old, grumpy-looking animal has been a frequent visitor at their aunt’s house for a couple of years. With winter approaching, he began sleeping in the garage, so she showed him some good old Southern hospitality and put out a blanket and snacks for him. Though Hank certainly isn’t a pet, he seems to have come to an understanding that her garage is a safe haven for him.

Hank is a big hit on r/aww

Opossums only live for 2-3 years, so Hank may not be around for long, but the Louisiana resident is happy to let him spend his old age somewhere where he’ll be safe from predators. And, as commenters point out, leaving opossums to do their thing is a great way to keep ticks and other dangerous pests under control. If you’re wondering how they catch so many ticks, it turns out that they just groom themselves constantly, so any tick that lands on them becomes a snack. Wildlife experts say that opossums clean up bugs, garden pests such as slugs, and rotting fruit, and even hunt venomous snakes. After doing such good service for his community, Hank deserves a comfortable retirement, don’t you think?

Scroll down for some cute opossum pics and facts about why these misunderstood animals make great neighbors and you shouldn’t bother them if you see them in your neighborhood!

If you’ve ever felt like your voice and opinion don’t matter in the vast world, then Seth is here to prove you wrong. This New Yorker runs the ‘Dude With Sign’ Instagram account where he uploads photos of himself protesting the strangest, weirdest, most random things. And the best thing is, we can relate to most of what he’s written on his signs.

He voices the things that we wish we had the guts to tell others. Yes, we all deserve free guacamole! Daylight savings has no place left in the modern world! There should be more chips and less air in bags!

We collected some of the very best protest sign pictures, so scroll down and enjoy! Let us know which signs were your favorites and which of Seth’s causes you agree with the most. Don’t forget to upvote the pics you liked best as well.

Something that I can personally relate to is that nobody cares about your Spotify and nobody wants to watch a dozen video stories from your weekly concert on Facebook or Instagram. You’re fighting the good fight, Seth. Keep it up, this is how heroes are made.

While we all love to have a good laugh, the role of humor in protest culture is no joke. According to one study, humor helps frame political protests, aids in creating a social movement’s collective identity, and is a powerful communication tool.

What’s more, humor energizes protests and brings protesters closer together through shared positive experiences. To put it simply, humor is a ‘weapon of the weak’ when it comes to protesting and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

There are many innovative ways to protest for a cause that you care about. So when you’re done looking through this list, check out Bored Panda’s previous articles about an Indian painter who protested bad roads by pretending to be an astronaut, as well as about a woman who proved her managers wrong by wearing the incredibly uncomfortable clothes they demanded everyone wear.

People Share How They Would Describe Colors To Blind People

$

Most of us take color for granted. It’s one of the most important features we use to describe how things look, but you’ll probably go blank if you try to describe what makes something green. If you’ve ever had that classic debate about whether “my red is your red”, you’ve probably realized that when you try to describe something from your own visual perception, any comparison you make is… also from your visual perception.

That sounds slightly confusing already, so let’s talk about how we can describe colors, or at least try to. Recently, someone started a Twitter thread asking how to explain colors to a blind person who has absolutely no visual reference. Some of the resources that rolled in, like a blog post from someone who was born with no light perception and gained it surgically later in life, and a children’s book describing color through raised print and similes, are fascinating and poetic.

Someone found a post about how a blind person had colors described to her

One commenter makes a great point, though: that our emotional associations with color are subjective, as is color symbolism from one culture to another. For years, designers have had to be careful with the colors that they use to market products internationally, because while a fiery color like red may put people in high spirits in the West, someone from a Middle Eastern culture that considers red a warning sign would probably think of it with apprehension.

The abstract nature of the descriptions struck a chord with some commenters who tried their hand at writing their own. Some of them are pretty relatable—if you live somewhere far north, you’re probably having a lot of grey days right now—while some people went wild with the format and ventured into absurdity and parody.

Here are how some commenters would describe colors, for better or worse

Photographer Takes Extreme Macro Photos To Show How Mesmerizing Mushrooms Can Be

When you’re walking down the forest, chances are you’ll see mushrooms with their brown hats, green moss that looks inviting to lay your head on, maybe even a deer running by. But there is a whole hidden tiny world that the human eye cannot see that easily and that world is truly mesmerizing to look at.

Meet Alison Pollack – a photographer for whom a stroll in a forest is more than just a way to relax and unwind. As Alison has a deep fascination with fungi and Myxomycetes, the subjects that she captures are sometimes as tiny as one or two millimeters. This results in breathtaking photographs, which reveal the macro world of our forests. Scroll down below to see the amazing pictures and interview with the photographer.

For Alison, nature was always something she was fascinated with. She was interested in macro photography for many years, but her love for capturing the miniature fungi and myxomycetes came around about a couple of years ago. “I didn’t get serious about it until a couple of years ago when I found and photographed my first Myxomycete. I had no idea what it was, so I looked it up online. I was immediately fascinated with the Myxomycete life cycle, and I have been avidly hunting and photographing them since then. As I looked for the tiny Myxos, I also started noticing really tiny fungi and started photographing and learning about them as well. These tiny organisms are all over the forest when it rains, but they are so small that people just don’t see them. My goal is to reveal their beauty and magic!” Alison told Bored Panda.

The photographer told us that what excites her the most about mushrooms and Myxomycetes is their amazing diversity in color, shape, size, texture – everything, really. “I am especially drawn to the tiny ones and the detail that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Many people have never heard of Myxomycetes, and also do not know that there are so many beautiful tiny fungi. My passion is to photograph them to show people the amazing beauty right at their feet as they walk in the forest,” Alison told us.

“Myxomycetes used to be considered part of the Kingdom of Fungi. They have characteristics of both fungi and amoebas and are now being placed in the Kingdom called Protista. Most of them are only 1-2 millimeters, much smaller than typical macro images. The common name for Myxomycetes is slime molds, but that isn’t a very appealing name!”

#7 Didymium Squamulosum (Chabot)

To capture these tiny living creatures of the forest, Alison uses macro and extreme macro lenses. Naturally, the smaller the subject is, the more challenging is to capture it, but, as the photographer explains, she loves the technical challenge. “When photographing such tiny subjects, the depth of field is extremely small, sometimes only one-hundredths of a millimeter. I use a technique called focus stacking, in which I take many multiple images at different focus distances and combine them to give a resulting photo with sharp detail from front to back. For the smallest of subjects, less than one millimeter tall, I typically take 200-300 images and combine them to create a single photo,” the talented photographer revealed to Bored Panda.

Alison says that during the months of the rainy season in Northern California, she goes to the woods several days a week and spends the majority of the day there. “I look for dots of color on the forest floor and on decomposing logs, then I look more closely with an LED-lit 10x magnifying lens I always carry with me. If I find a good decomposing log, I can be there for hours, looking at many places in the log to find and photograph these treasures of the forest, as I like to call them,” she says. “I take a lot of time to compose and take my photographs. I spend quite a bit of time cleaning my subjects with very small paintbrushes and surgical tweezers, as I want people to see their beauty. Composition is important, so I look for what I think is the best angle that shows off their beauty and details,” Alison adds.

The photographer just came back from Peru where she also photographed tiny creatures of the woods. She has also photographed mushrooms and myxomycetes in Colombia. ” I love to travel and would love to have the opportunity to go to other countries to photograph their mushrooms and Myxomycetes,” Alison told us. “I live in Northern California, near San Francisco, where there are many beautiful forests. I have photographed mushrooms and myxos in several other states; Oregon, Washington, and Alaska in particular have wonderful old forests full of forest treasures.”

“I am retired, so I have the time to do my photography hobby. It feels like a full time job because I spend so much time doing it, but I thoroughly enjoy it. Most of my photos take many hours of work to create, and I love the amount of detail that I am able to reveal in these tiny mushrooms and myxos. I am a mathematician by training, and I did a lot of computer modeling in my work, so that background has helped me with the large amount of digital processing that I do.”

#15 Dacryopinax Elegans (Colombia)

Alison says that she is constantly seeking to perfect her photography, both technically as well as artistically. “I am considering getting a 10x microscope objective that I can use with my camera to be able to photograph even smaller subjects with greater detail. I want to visit more areas, both near and far, to find different species to photograph and share with people.” To see more of Alison’s amazing work, head on to her Instagram page!

#22 Albino Plant

Trees, like animals, can also experience albinism, though it is extremely rare. The reason it’s rare is because without chlorophyll, the plant can’t get energy, and dies shortly after sprouting unless it has some other source of food. So if you see a big plant that doesn’t have any green in its leaves, it’s getting its nutrition from the roots of a neighbouring plant of the same species, feeding on the sugars created by the other plant’s photosynthesis. Albino plants are basically vampires.

#132 Whittier Is A City In The U.S. State Of Alaska. The Population Is Around 220 And They All Live In A Single Building

Whittier, Alaska, a town where nearly everyone lives in the same building. The fourteen-story high-rise—called Begich Towers, or BTI—contains a post office, a police station, a grocery store, a Laundromat, a health clinic, and a church. (There once was a combination video rental store and tanning salon, but it’s been closed for a while now.) Built by the US Army in the 1950s, BTI originally housed officers and their families, and though its concrete walls have since been given a cheerful paint job, the fortress-like, institutional feel remains.

Security Camera Captures Unique Footage Of Thieves Failing So Hard It Looks Like A ’90s Comedy Movie

One modern Christmas tradition in some families is to spend the holidays watching all of the Home Alone films. (Well, the good ones, at least.) But few of us consider that the premise of Home Alone could happen in real life, even without the help of smart and tenacious kids to stop the evildoers.

Not all criminals are as capable as the characters in Ocean’s Eleven or as confident as the villains in James Bond films. Some criminals are clumsy, incompetent, and hilarious.

A video of thieves trying to steal a widescreen television from someone’s home is making the rounds online. The keyword here is trying because even three grown criminals weren’t able to accomplish this task and they hurt themselves several times in the process like they were in a Home Alone spinoff without Kevin. The trio looks like it belongs in an old-timey comedy film. Or a jail cell. Either works.

Bored Panda spoke about protecting our homes from thieves and burglars to security specialist Andrew Tierney who is based in London and goes by the nickname Cybergibbons. Scroll down for the full informative video.

Someone decided to put some hilarious sounds over it and it made the video even funnier

When the video was posted on Reddit, internet users were quick to poke fun at the thieves who broke into the home and caused a lot of damage this way, but ended up with nothing. Some Redditors even gave potential thieves tips on how to draw less attention to themselves while doing a ‘job’ (that’s a big no-no). While other people noticed that the thieves weren’t even wearing gloves, so they must have left their fingerprints and DNA everywhere.

After watching the video, Cybergibbons had this to say: “So you can see that this is a commercial property, and that is tempered glass—the stuff that breaks into a lot of small pieces. That’s quite hard to secure. You can break them using an automatic center punch, and most of the time just knock the pieces out.”

“There are a few ways you can make windows better. Window films can be retrofitted, and come in a range of thicknesses and strengths. They will slow down an attacker from 10 seconds to maybe 20 seconds to 1 minute. That can be enough.”

Cybergibbons continued: “Laminate reinforced glass would be the next step, you are up to several minutes for the stuff that is meant to stop people. Then plastics, which are very difficult to break. Security screens or bars as well. The problem with commercial properties is that if you have a massive glass frontage, these all cost a lot.”

He also noted that it’s unlikely that the thieves would get caught because “Fingerprints need someone to take the fingerprints and do something, [but] most burglary doesn’t meet the threshold for police to do this anymore due to [lack of resources].

In a previous interview with security specialist Tierney, Bored Panda learned that we can’t generalize that mechanical locks are safer than electronic locks, for instance. However, “you don’t need to spend as much to get a decent mechanical lock. Many of the electronic ones are bad, though.”

Here’s the original video of how the three thieves hurt themselves while trying to steal a TV

“A typical burglar isn’t advanced. Really you are looking at lock-snapping being the most advanced attack. It is often just force. There are not the same kind of electronic attacks as against cars, because there is no money in it and you can’t trivially tell from the outside.”

Tierney said that it’s not worth bolting things down in your home, “unless it’s your safe or a lock point for a bike, motorbike, or caravan.”

Architects never seize to surprise us with their intricate and innovative designs. Some showcase their ingenuity by creating unique functionalities in the houses they design, others demonstrate never-seen-before exteriors. Recently, architect Karina Wiciak of Wamhouse studio demonstrated unusual house designs after finding inspiration in an unexpected place — logos of famous brands. Logos, usually being simplistic yet novel, turned out to be the perfect reference to outstanding architecture.

We all know what a huge impact a good professor can have on the subject they are teaching. Even the dullest material can become entertaining if the educator is teaching with passion, drive and gets a little bit of fun involved in the process. This is exactly what Tidewater Community College physics professor David Wright does. He is known among his students as a fun educator who’s willing to go the extra mile to keep them interested in his teaching.

Recently a physics professor went viral for his unconventional and entertaining teaching methods

Recently, one of his students named Erica posted a compilation video of all the crazy things Wright has done during his lectures. The video quickly went viral and now has over 4 million views and nearly 800k likes. One thing is clear, the professor likes unconventional teaching methods and people love it!

Wright who is in his 70’s and has been teaching at TCC since 1974 loves to demonstrate how physics works in real life. “If you just memorize all of this stuff, it would be a torturous class, if they get the key idea then everything else becomes natural,” he says.

That’s why he makes his classes interactive. He uses toys, impressive experiments, and fun activities to demonstrate how the theories work. From teaching about liquid nitrogen by making ice cream to explaining the surface-tension by lying down on a nail bed, Wright never seizes to surprise his class.

“If I don’t get excited about the subject, my students definitely won’t. If I can get people excited about science, that would be amazing,” the professor explains. Wright says that he hopes to get students thinking that everything in life relates to physics.

Wright, who was given one of only 11 Outstanding Faculty Awards by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia in 2002, is not only known for being a professor. He also served as a science consultant and scriptwriter for the NASA Science Files television show and also performs physics demonstrations at theme parks, he has even been on Saturday Night Live back in the day.

Mom’s Viral Post Shows You Shouldn’t Visit Someone Who Just Gave Birth

The birth of a child is a big moment not only for their parents. New grandpas and grandmas, aunts and uncles, and pretty much all relatives and friends want to catch a glimpse of the little bundle of joy. However, in all of this chaos, people might forget the person they should be paying the most attention to. The mother. And it can really wear them down.

Katie Bowman, the “creator of twins and their big sister,” recently wrote an incredibly touching text, explaining the importance of rest for new moms. Shared on her blog Living My Family Life, the post resonated with thousands of women and should become a must-read for everyone who wants to go to the hospital to visit the new family member.

Katie thinks it’s normal for people to be so excited to see a new baby. “It’s a special moment and they want to be involved. I just think sometimes that overwhelming excitement can sometimes cloud their judgment, and they try to justify that seeing the new baby is more important than listening to what the new mum wants,” she told Bored Panda.

She believes there are only 2 things you can do to get away from this unwanted attention. Either ask for space or demand it when people don’t listen. It’s a very sensitive time and unfortunately, you’re normally made to feel like the bad guy no matter what you say.

“I was lucky to have people who wanted to celebrate the life of our daughter, I just had some a bit late, which left me feeling exhausted as shown in my picture, staring at everyone wishing they would leave so I could finally get some sleep. The whole post is not related specifically to my experience, but experiences in general for new mothers. I feel like it’s a subject where mums feel like they have to just take a back seat and allow their newborn to feel like everyone’s property. It’s about reminding everyone that childbirth is a special moment, and they need to remember that with a new baby, there is a new mother. A new mother who is made to feel like she can’t speak up about her own feelings, because apparently everyone else’s feelings are more important at this time.”

The next time she was pregnant, Katie decided to avoid the tricky situation altogether.”For our second pregnancy, we said we probably wouldn’t want visitors at the hospital this time, especially with there being 2 babies. If it was going to be anything like my first birth, I knew I wasn’t going to want to put on a brave face to see anyone. As it was, the twins were a much easier delivery surprisingly and I felt great and ready to see family the next morning,” the mom said.

People had a lot to say about Katie’s powerful message

The responses her post has received taught Katie that there are loads of mothers who wished they could have had some alone time with their new baby. “It’s a special moment, and it’s something they will never get back. Then there were people who proved exactly what I said. They made it sound like I was a complete drama queen because I wanted some rest instead of visitors. Apparently it’s got to be all or nothing.”
