What the Night Sky Would Look Like If Cities Went Dark (9 pics)

No light pollution, just clear dark skies, illuminated by the Milky Way over the skyscrapers and tall buildings. Can you imagine that? Photographer Thierry Cohen sure can. His hard work and determination now gives us a chance to have a glimpse at what nowadays can hardly be seen with the naked eye – sparkling and twinkling stars above the biggest cities of the world.

In the Darkened Cities photography series, some of the major cities are photographed in two ways to complete one final image. First a city is photographed from places, where there’s no light pollution and the stars and planets are clearly visible in the sky, and the second shot is taken in the day time. The two photos are then compiled together by photoshopping the daylight into the nocturnal scenery, and the Darkened City image is born.

When the nightlife calms down and the lights go out, the magic of the night begins. Unfortunately, this lost experience now can only be admired in the digital pictures.

That’s why we’re so thankful that Thierry Cohen’s provides us with this stargazing experience!
