Ever wanted to walk in space? Now you can – simply by visiting the large-scale installation by Tomás Saraceno in Düsseldorf, Germany. Suspended in 20 meters height above the piazza of K21 Ständehaus and covering an area of 2500 sq. meters, this gigantic safety net installation was fairly entitled “in orbit”.
Composed of three floating “levels”, separated by huge air-filled PVC spheres (up to 8,5 meters in diameter), “in orbit” allows you to observe the world from greater heights, and move around while feeling weightless. “For me, the work visualizes the space-time continuum, the three-dimensional web of a spider, the ramifications of tissue in the brain, dark matter, or the structure of the universe. With ‘in orbit,’ proportions enter into new relationships; human bodies become planets, molecules, or social black holes,” says Saraceno.
The installation was carefully planned together with engineers, architects, and arachnologists – experts on spiders and spider webs. And though it might seem as light as a cloud or soap bubble, the structure alone weighs 3000 kg, with the largest of spheres weighing up to 300 kg.
